Mallorca By Night

A nighttime shot of a city by the water. The light radiates as big stars, because of the chosen aperture.

The big lights was painting all the buildings around them, with colored light. I thought if i used longer exposures, i could capture it. This HDR is made up of four shots. 1 minute, 2 minutes, 4 minutes and a 8 minute shot. I chose f/22 to really emphasize the star feeling of the light.

Its shot from the balcony of the hotel where we stayed. Its my first HDR shot using my Nikon 80-200mm. Its awesome. I have replaced the original lens hood, with a Hama 77mm Screw-In Rubber Zoom Lens Hood for 24mm to 210mm Lenses. If you look at the exif, its says 300mm. That's because the Nikon D200 has a x1.5 crop factor and are therefor not full frame like the D700 or the D3.

Camera: Nikon D200
Focal length: 300mm
Aperture: f/22
Exposures: 4

Could be the best HDR night shot I have seen. Amazing!! I do like the “star” effect. All your hard work was worth it! Simply awesome!

Stunning shot! I love your nightshots! They are really cool. You really emphasized the star effect of the lights. Even on the left.

Great work! Those lights overwhelm the image but they look so so cool! Beautiful.

Spectacular lighting effect. Excellent capture of the details in the buildings in this night time shot.

Hi Mad, yes i like the lightning effect, works well. One shot 8 minutes - wow - so i think you must spend any time for the PP - the D200 had problems with long exporsures and the noise, but you handle it very good, respect!!!

Bo on August 17, 2008 15:18

Thanks all.

@Klaus: Yes the D200 does add noise when used with long exposures, but there’s an option in the menu that will improve the long exposures. Where the camera takes an extra shot, without raising the mirror and then calculating where the sensor adds noise. The D300, D700 & D3’s new sensor is really incredible, almost noise free. Its really amazing. I have added links to them above.

Really a spot on exposure. The star effect on the lights gives it a unique and effective element.
