The Flatiron is the building that everybody takes pictures of. I decided to do it from the top of Empire State building. If you do not know the Flatiron building it is the one on the right. Having a triangular shape.

The Flatiron building was design by Daniel Burnham. The construction of the Flatiron building was completed in 1902 and at that time, it was one of the tallest building in New York. Also it was one of the first buildings to use a steel skeleton.

The Flatiron building is 87 meters high. I balanced my telephoto lens on the rail on top of the Empire State building and shot as many brackets as i could. Only four was usable.

Camera: Nikon D200
Focal length: 300mm
Aperture: f/5.6
Exposures: 4

So much detail, so much to see, such a famous building, you did her proud, seen from the top everybody will understand why it is called ‘Flatiron’ a great picture. It always amazes me when I was in NY more than 25 years ago, all those wooden water tanks on top of those buildings when I see such a tank…..I ‘see’ NY.

Bo, excellent capture, now i know what i miss the last days ;-) - And a litte tip, try it with a single raw in Photomatix, for me it works perfect.

Claus Petersen on June 9, 2008 09:11

Great shot, there is a lot of detail to look at here!

@ReallyJapan: I thought the exact same thing.

@Klaus: I thought about doing a single raw, but for this site i think it would be cheating, since one raw really isn’t hdr ;)

You must have had a very clear day for this to work. This is a good capture of the madness that is NYC.

Nice architecture shot, like some 3D scene for me…

It definitely is a different perspective that you usually see. Very nicely done, and I like how you can see all the way down the road on the left.

Andy on June 10, 2008 01:23

Really nice shot. It is a different perspective for sure and I think it works very well!

Good shot of the Flatiron building Bo. I’ve never seen it photographed from high up.

John Maslowski on June 12, 2008 01:10

I’ve seen this building but didn’t know it’s history, thanks for the narrative. This view is awesome, great clarity especially for New York. Love the details of the entire view. Lots of great architectural lines and patterns, excellent image.
